Frankie Knuckles Mural
When Frankie Knuckles passed away in 2014 graffiti artist Mike Tupak created this mural in recognition of "The Godfather Of House". I include this as I particularly like the use of a vinyl record as a halo on a background of clouds. Were house music not so overtly tied up with christian iconography I wouldn't have thought twice about it, and just assumed it was clever repurposing. But with Chicago House music being so complex and interwoven with religious threads it's made me reassess the image.
The mural has since been painted over due to property development, but a campaign to recreate the mural has been successfully crowd funded. The full story is available here and check out Dave Hoekstra's awesome blog.
